this week’s awesome finds

I really like the look of garter stitch. Might have to make a pair soon. Mitten pattern form Martha Stewart.

Awesome retro-looking chevron clutch. Pattern from Fiber Flux.

Cat cupcakes! Adorableness overload. Pattern by Stuff Susie Made.

Also in garter stitch, I really like this skirt. Maybe in less bright colours, but I would totally wear it. From Knitty.

This is so awesome! OctoMitts! On sale on Ravelry by SpillyJane Knits.

Sweetest hand muffs ever. Free Ravelry download by Mizpah Thomas.

Have an awesome week, everyone!

Have been working on this cardigan over January. I have two piles of leftover grey yarn, neither is enough to knit a whole sweater so I thought I would combine them in a random striping pattern. The ripply texture of garter stitch and the different tones of grey remind me of the lichens I saw on a road trip to Bruce Peninsula two summers ago.

I followed this cardigan pattern from Pierrot. It’s has a nice chart that I learned to read with the help of this wonderful document. I followed all the instructions for stitch count, increases and decreases in the chart, but I used a larger needle (7.5mm), made button holes all the way down the front (though they’re not quite spaced evenly despite my best efforts. Oh well) and knitted everything in garter stitch, which I think has a simple, rustic look to it that I really love. Like lichens.

Here’s the back view…

And I thought some nice unpolished wood buttons would go well with the simple garter stitch.

I’ve been wanting to make a versatile grey cardigan for a while and I think this is it! I’m very happy with it. And I think I’m starting to appreciate the slower pace of knitting. I still avoid circular needles as much as possible (I chose this pattern mainly because it’s knitted flat and seamed), but maybe one day I’ll start to appreciate them too. And because it’s knitted quite loosely with the relatively large needles I crocheted all the seams together with a 6.5mm hook.

On a slightly separate note, I mentioned a couple of times that I’ve crocheted the Masonry Jacket, but it turned out really rather stiff and doesn’t look all that good on me. So I’m pretty sure I’m going to take it apart to make something else. I’m thinking of knitting a basic sweater in garter or moss stitch. Would be nice to wear over collared shirt. Will keep you posted!

Have an awesome week, everyone!

quick knits with stolen time

A few things with school and work got cancelled, so the first two weeks of the semester weren’t as busy as I thought, and I suddenly have time on my hands for a few quick knitting projects :D

Mike requested these to wear in his chilly office.

hobbit mitt 2I used this pattern. Knitted flat and seamed together.

And then I made myself this hat, knitted sideways in garter stitch.

Was being really woolly that day, wearing a woolly hat and a woolly sweater.

I followed this pattern. It was fun to learn short rows! I decreased the number of stitches because I used a much thicker yarn (super bulky) and much larger needles (10 mm) than called for, and I didn’t do the knit TBL for the top and the brim.

Well, whatever got cancelled mostly got pushed to this week, so things will get busier, but hopefully I will still be able to sit down and knit for a while in the evening.

Have a wonderful week, everyone!

moss & ferns

moss and ferns

This was the knitting project I mentioned a couple of posts ago :D It’s a Lion Brand pattern. The lace pattern was a bit confusing at first and I had to take it apart a couple of times. Thankfully no stitches were lost (I think), and after 2 weeks of knitting I pretty much got the pattern memorized so it got a lot easier after that. Just two rectangles with a bit of neck shaping. The collar turned out a bit smaller than I thought, so I just crocheted 1 round of single crochet to finish it off rather than doing the 3 rounds of k1 p1 ribbing as instructed. A bit big on me all around but I like that it’s long.

I really like the texture of the moss stitch. I think I’m going to try to make up a sweater pattern with moss stitch, bulky yarn and 10 mm needles. We’ll see.

Have a happy Wednesday!

trip to the aquarium

photo 1

For months I have been staring at this poster while waiting for the train.

And finally, we were there! :D

Hello, friendly-looking turtle!

Yes, this is the new aquarium in Toronto. I love sea creatures. I’m not sure what I think about aquariums, zoos, and animals in captivity. But I’m happy to be able to see the sea creatures that I would never be able to see in person otherwise, and I hope that they’re being well taken care of.

This reminds me of the kodama (forest spirits) in Princess Mononoke.

And the reef exhibit reminds me of the crystal palace in Journey to the West (popular Chinese story about a monkey king) where the dragon king lives. It is so very magical.

The part I was most looking forward to was the jelly fish tank. It was hard to take good pictures of, but so mesmerizing…

New year, new school supply! :D

I bring a travel mug to school to take advantage of the kettle in the student lounge. Green tea does help to increase concentration in lectures.

I used the pattern from Little Things Blogged for the fox fingerless mitts. Started with the same number of stitches in the foundation chain, but added a few stitches around in the second last round to accommodate the shape of the mug. Instead of a brown fox, I thought I’d make a grey one, like Kristofferson in Fantastic Mr. Fox (I love that movie :D).

Cheers to the new year!

holiday crafting :D

Despite having to shop online for many of our presents this year because of lack of time, I managed to finish a few handmade gifts :D

I’m quite proud of these mittens from pattern by Little Things Blogged.

Granny sweaters by Bev’s Country Cottage for my niece and nephew, they seemed to like them :D

Owl mitts for a dear friend. They were knitted. It was an awesome pattern to work with because it was worked flat then seamed (I have trouble knitting in the round). Each took me an evening to make, and used an incredibly small amount of yarn (I made both with 1 skein of Patton Classic Wool with a lot of yarn left over).

Every year Mike and I collaborate to make Christmas cards for everyone. This year we made simple snowflake cards by “dyeing” coffee filters with markers and using the dyed papers to make snowflakes with a snowflake/star punch.

The coffee filters were too soft to use the snowflake punch with, so we had to sandwich the coffee filter with flyers to make it easier to punch, and we’re left with these really nice flyer snowflakes, which I’m reluctant to throw out…

Wishing you much joy for the new year!

here comes the sun

As Christmas approached Ontario encountered a pretty severe ice storm. All the trees were all encased in ice overnight. They looked absolutely magical, but weight of the ice also caused the branches to snap and fall, carrying power lines with them, and thousands were left without power for days. The power in our building was down, but we were blessed with friends who opened their home (and cupboard full of tea!) to us and family we could stay with.

Still we stayed a day in the apartment without light and heat (how I took these luxuries for granted when I had them!). The sky was also very grey that day, and as the day began to grow dark at 3:30 in the afternoon I was starting to get this feeling that the power outage situation wasn’t going to end. When we left our apartment to stay with my family and Mike’s family for the holidays our building’s power and water supply was still down. They were staying on the news that the power may not be restored for everyone before Christmas. Here’s hoping that everyone will be warm and safe over the holidays.

When we arrived at my parents’ today the sun shone through the clouds as it was setting. The ice on the tree branches started to melt and was sparkling like jewels. It reminded me of the words from this song by Relient K, which was also the theme song for the movie The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

It’s always winter but never Christmas
It seems this curse just can’t be lifted
Yet in the midst of all this ice and snow
Our hearts stay warm cause they are filled with hope

And everything it changed overnight
This dying world you brought it back to life
And deep inside I felt things
Shifting everything was melting
Away oh away
And you gave us the most beautiful of days

Cause when it’s always winter but never Christmas
Sometimes it feels like you’re not with us
But deep inside our hearts we know
That you are here and we will not lose hope

Wishing everyone a merry Christmas and a new year filled with joy, peace, love, and hope.
